Film Noir: A matter of light and shadow
Film noir is characterized by chiaroscuro lighting (the dramatic use of
light and shade); night scenes, sometimes in glistening wet streets,
blocks of shadow on the face hinting at an unrevealed “dark side”) and
bars of shadow from Venetian blinds or windows, conveying a sense of
being trapped; and claustrophobic or unbalanced camera framing.
