What if you woke up one morning and discovered you might be the last
person on earth? That’s the basic premise of two terrific sci-fi thrillers,
THE QUIET EARTH and
THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS.
In the first, an Aussie scientist figures out that the project he was
leading to create a worldwide energy grid has misfired and caused a
fundamental change in the basic structure of all matter. In the second, a
man in a London hospital, his eyes bandaged from surgery, discovers
that while he was asleep a meteor blinded the entire world population
and spawned people-munching plants. In both movies, it turns out there
are a few other survivors still around, but way too few to rate a zip
code! And each of these movies is saved from being a time waster by
imaginative plotting and interesting, if not always sophisticated,
special effects.
